Yalung Ri (5630m) is a trekking peak situated in Rolwaling Valley in the east-central Nepal, near Tibet/China border. Ramdung (5930m), Chugmage (6259m), Chobulse (6689m) are other trekking peaks close to its vicinity.
Yalung Ri is relatively an easy peak to climb as mountaineers will have to make their way through rocks and ice and walk on glaciers. The base camp is set up at the height of 4750m; it takes around 4 hours to reach the summit from BC.
The journey to Yalung Ri is an exciting one involving quite a few days of trekking in the isolated, pristine natural region of the Himalayas. Singati, Suri Dhoban, Jagat, Simi Gaon, Kelchey are some of the settlements you will pass by. Nagaon Village at an altitude of 4183m is the last village before the summit. Climbers will have to retrace the same trail on their way back.
Those climbers and trekkers with additional time have the option to take the Tso Rolpa trail on their return. This entails crossing Tashi Lapcha pass (5755m), one of the highest and difficult Himalayan passes and drop down to Namceh Bazar in Khumbu Valley. Along the way you will be able to enjoy the supreme Himalayas, beautiful flowers, local hospitality and pristine wildlife.
One of the advantages of choosing Yalung Ri is that you are not required to take peak permit to climb the mountain. Nevertheless mountaineering equipment is a must.

b) Trekking and Climbing
Yalung Ri is considered a moderate trekking peak. It doesn’t require advanced technical climbing, but you will need to be comfortable using crampons, an ice axe, and a harness. The final ascent usually involves glacier travel and snow slopes that may require a fixed rope depending on conditions. While the route isn’t particularly technical, the altitude, weather, and physical effort still make it a challenge. Ideal for fit trekkers or beginner climbers looking to push their limits.
Your expedition leader or Sherpa guide will help during the climb, but some familiarity with alpine conditions and gear will improve your confidence and safety.
Unlike more crowded peaks like Island or Mera Peak, Yalung Ri offers solitude and untouched beauty. The trail winds through the pristine Rolwaling Valley, a region rich in Sherpa culture and mythology (it’s said to be the home of the yeti!). You'll get spectacular views of Gaurishankar, Melungtse, and the Tibetan border peaks without the commercial feel. It’s also more accessible and affordable than many other climbing peaks.
The best seasons are:
During these months, the weather is typically stable, dry, and clear, with good visibility and lower risk of snowstorms. Spring may offer more flowers and greenery, while autumn gives you crisp mountain views and cooler temperatures.
You’ll need a few key permits:
Trekking Phase: You’ll stay in basic teahouses or homestays in local villages. They offer simple rooms with shared facilities.
Base Camp and Climbing Phase: You’ll stay in tents, including sleeping tents, a dining tent, and a kitchen tent. Your crew will prepare meals, and you’ll sleep in warm, insulated sleeping bags.
It’s a mix of rustic charm and alpine camping adventure!
Yes, as with any peak above 5,000 meters, altitude sickness is a real risk. The route includes a smart acclimatization plan to help your body adjust. Symptoms can include:
Drinking plenty of water, going slow, and having acclimatization days will help. Some climbers also carry Diamox. Guides are trained to monitor health and respond appropriately if symptoms appear.
You should start training at least 2–3 months before the climb. Focus on:
It’s also wise to go on high-altitude treks or hikes if you live near mountains, to prepare your body for reduced oxygen levels.
