Upper Dolpo Extensive Trek takes you to the heart of Dolpo, a land of mystery, scenery and peace. Also called “Ba Yul” or the Hidden valley, Dolpo falls on a rain shadow area and has been opened for trekking since 1991.
Upper Dolpo Extensive Trek’s attraction is the Shey-Phoksundo National Park lying to the north of the Dhaulagiri Range bordering the Tibetan Plateau. Here one can find a well-preserved eco-system of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and the elusive snow leopard. The views of Kanjiroba peak (6883m), Phoksundo Lake (3610m), and the Dhauligiri massif (8167m) are some of the most rewarding moments of this trek. A visit to the Phoksundo Gompa – dedicated to the ancient Bonpo religion, of the locals of Dolpo and Tibet, is a memorable experience.
Our representative will take you to the airport for a flight to Nepalgunj. In Nepalgunj you will be taken to your hotel. Stay overnight at hotel in Nepalgunj.
Catch a morning flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. From Juphal you start trekking to Dunai, which is the headquater of Dolpo, a remote district of Nepal. You will walk through farms and villages along Bheri River. Stay overnight at camp.
Trek past Suligad situated on the confluence of Bheri and Suli river and enter Shey Phoksundo National Park. The narrow trail climbs through a forest of Maple, Oak and Pine passing by Kagbeni and Shyangta. Stay overnight at camp.
The trail follows a small river before climbing a ridge. Ahead you pass through a forest that gives way to a small hamlet of Renje. Stay overnight at camp.
The trail ascends to a ridge at 3780m which offers great views of Phokshumdo Lake and Phoksumdo waterfall. Afterwards the route is through birch forests reaching to Ringmo village. Stay overnight at Camp.
Today, you can explore Phoksumdo Lake and Ringmo Village. Stay overnight at Camp.
Follow a narrow trail cut on a cliff to get to other side of the Phoksumod lake. Forest camp is adorned by pine forests with beautiful views of the lake. Stay overnight at camp.
The trail firstly follows Tuk Kyaksa River opening up to a wide valley and canyon. Nagda La base camp is prominently visible with its large rock slab. Stay overnight at Camp.
This is perhaps the best trekking day as you will visit the 8th century Shey Gompa and capture great views of 'Crystal Mountain'. The trail climbs steeply to cross the Naga La pass (5350m) or Kangla pass which offers a rare glimpse the valley of Dolpo along with Shey Shikkar and Kang Chunne. Stay overnight in camp.
Today you will have plenty of time to explore Shey Gompa, interact with locals and learn about the Tibetan culture and lifestyle. Stay overnight in camp.
About 2 hrs walk uphill from Shey Gompa takes near to Shey La Pass. The pass affords fantastic views from Mustang as far as to Tibet. The peaks of Kanjiroba, Kagmara and Riu Dhukta are also splendid. The trail then descends all the way to Namgung. Stay overnight at Camp.
Walk past the Namgung cliff and beside Namga Khola. The trail is much barren landscape. Saldang is a small village with few houses. The traditional doctors called Amchi are found in this village. Stay overnight at Camp.
The trail is very easy and the walk short today. The route passes through Rapyha Khola and reaches up to Khoma La at an altitude of 4500m. before descending to Tibetan village of Komash. Stay overnight at Camp.
This stretch is rich in biodiversity as the chances of seeing Snow Leopard or Blue Sheep is quite high. En route you will cross over Shimen La (4260m) pass. Stay overnight at Camp.
Follow Panjyang Khola initially and then go past a few villages and gompas. Stay overnight at camp.
The trek today is nice and easy. You will encounter the village of Yak Kharka- a grazing meadow of Yaks. Stay overnight at camp.
Today you will cross yet another high pass called Mola (5030m.). The trail rather easily descends to Chharka village which is famous for a Bon Monastery. Stay overnight at camp.
The experience of trekking today is through arid and barren landscape without any human settlement. Stay overnight at camp.
You will come face to face with one of the highest Himalayan passes today called Niwa La at an altitude of 5320m. The views of geographical features will mesmerize you. Stay overnight at camp.
Early morning you will cross Niwa La pass and then another pass called Jungbenla at an astounding 5550m altitude. From here you descend to Tuche-La. Stay overnight at Camp.
You will enjoy the hike as it is mostly downhill. Stay overnight at Camp.
Keep your feet in the ground as you will cross nine ridges today and then dramatically drop down to Kali Gandaki valley. Phalyak village is perched on the bank of Kali Gandaki River. Stay overnight at Camp.
This is the last day of your trek. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki river downstream. Jomsom is an ancient trade town between Tibet and Nepal and is the age old habitat of highly enterprising Thakali community. Stay overnight at lodge.
The flight is a scenic one with panoramic views of Himalayan peaks, especially Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri etc. Stay overnight at hotel in Pokhara.
After breakfast early morning, drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu that takes about seven hours. En route, you will enjoy the mountain views, green sceneries, rice terrace fields, vegetable fields and people being engaged in their daily life activities. If you choose to fly back to Kathmandu, it takes about 25 minutes. There are several flights from Kathmandu to Pokhara from morning to afternoon. Stay overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.
