Cost of the trek depends of various aspects.
After an early breakfast, depart from Kathmandu for a 9-hour drive to Jagat (1350m) via Soti Khola (730m) and Arughat Bazaar (570m). The drive follows a well-paved road along the banks of the Khani Khola, Trishuli River, and Thopal Khola up to Tari Besi. This picturesque journey offers views of lush green hills, flowing streams, terraced farmlands, traditional villages, small markets, and mountain vistas. After Tari Besi, continue on a gravel road, crossing Ankhu Khola, leading to Arughat Bazaar—an old market located by the Budhi Gandaki River. From here, drive along the Budhi Gandaki River to reach Jagat. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trail is mostly level, leading through forests of pine and rhododendron. A suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River brings you to Philim, a large Gurung village. Continue trekking from Philim to Deng, a village known for its agricultural produce, including potatoes, buckwheat, barley, cabbage, and spinach. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trek begins with a gentle path before ascending through forested hills towards Namrung. Stay overnight at lodge.
Today's trail offers spectacular views of Mt. Manaslu, Gorkha Himal, Dwijen Himal, Saula Himal, Lajing Peak, and other snow-capped mountains. As the elevation increases, the vegetation becomes sparser. Along the trail, you will encounter Mani walls, chortens, prayer flags, and monasteries. Lho Gaon provides panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Stay overnight at lodge.
Following the right bank of the river, you will enjoy constant views of Peak 29. Sama Gaon is a beautiful village inhabited by the Bhote community and serves as the gateway for Mt. Manaslu expeditions. Stay overnight at lodge.
You may choose to hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4400m) for stunning views of Samdo (Pang Phuchuli), Nagdichuli, Simnang Himal, and the Manaslu Glacier and Icefall. Alternatively, visit the nearby Birendra Kunda, an icy lake located close to the base camp. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trail ascends gently through a barren, windy valley. The Tibetan border is only 4 kilometers away from Samdo, offering spectacular views of Mt. Manaslu, Samdo Peak (Pang Phuchuli), Nagdichuli, and the Manaslu Glacier and Icefall. Stay overnight at lodge.
The rocky and challenging trail leads to Larkya La Phedi, also known as Dharmashala. Along the way, visit the Larkya Bazaar, where seasonal fairs are held. Stay overnight at lodge.
Trek from Larkya La Phedi (4460m) to Bimthang (3590m) via Larkya La Pass (5135m)—a demanding 8-hour trek. The trail is rocky and full of ups and downs, eventually leading to Bimthang. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trail descends through high pastures and into the Burdin Khola Valley. From a ridge at 4150 meters, you'll enjoy impressive views of Manaslu to the southeast and Annapurna II to the southwest. After crossing the Dudh Khola, follow a narrow valley until reaching Karche (2785m) and later Tilje. Continue with a short uphill climb, crossing a bridge over the Marshyangdi River, to arrive at Dharapani. Stay overnight at lodge.
Drive from Dharapani to Kathmandu—a scenic 9-hour journey along the banks of the Marshyangdi and Trishuli Rivers. Enjoy splendid views of green hills, mountains, terraced farms, and vibrant villages en route.
The Manaslu Base Camp Trek is a side trip or optional extension of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, leading trekkers from Samagaon (3530m) up to Manaslu Base Camp at around 4800 meters. While the Manaslu Circuit is a full loop around the Manaslu massif, the Base Camp trek is usually done as a day hike from Samagaon to the base of the mountain. It offers a more up-close view of Mt. Manaslu, glaciers, and moraines, making it a rewarding add-on for those who have the stamina and extra time.
The trek to the base camp is usually done as a full-day hike from Samagaon. It takes about 6 to 8 hours round trip, depending on pace, weather, and acclimatization. Most trekkers spend an extra acclimatization day in Samagaon, and this hike is a great way to both acclimatize and experience jaw-dropping mountain scenery.
It is not usually a standalone trek. The Manaslu Base Camp route is part of the Manaslu Circuit Trek—one of Nepal’s most scenic and culturally rich treks. However, some adventure trekkers do make custom itineraries that focus on Samagaon and Base Camp and return the same way, but this is less common due to the remote location and permit requirements.
The hike is considered moderately challenging to strenuous, mainly due to:
It’s best attempted after proper acclimatization in Samagaon, and trekking poles are helpful. The trail is not technical, but you need to be in good physical condition.
Highlights include:
This side trip adds an epic, high-mountain experience to the already remarkable Manaslu Circuit.
Yes, altitude sickness is a potential concern, as you’ll be reaching close to 4800 meters. It’s important to:
The acclimatization hike to the base camp is a great way to prepare for Larkya La Pass later in the Manaslu Circuit trek.
You’ll need:
The best seasons are:
Yes, on the way to the base camp, you’ll pass Birendra Tal, a beautiful glacial lake located just a short walk from Samagaon. The hike continues upward along the Manaslu Glacier, offering dramatic views of icefalls and moraine-covered slopes as you approach the base of the mountain.
You should be in good physical condition. Daily trekking on the circuit ranges from 5 to 7 hours, and the base camp hike in particular is a steep ascent at high altitude. While no climbing experience is required, prior trekking experience at altitudes above 3500m. is very helpful. Training with hikes and cardio beforehand is recommended.
Yes. Challenges include:
Your guide will help assess if it’s safe to hike on the day, and in bad weather, the hike can be skipped without impacting the overall Manaslu Circuit trek.
Because it offers an unmatched chance to stand at the foot of one of the world’s highest peaks. Many trekkers pass through Samagaon without realizing how close they are to Mt. Manaslu’s glacial world. It’s the perfect acclimatization hike before the Larkya La Pass, and the views from base camp are surreal. If you have the time and energy, this side trip adds an unforgettable chapter to your Manaslu adventure
