Everest Base Camp trek with Island Peak Climbing Altitude Profile

FAQs

It’s physically demanding and moderately technical. The trek to Everest Base Camp is tough due to high altitude and long days, but manageable for most fit hikers. Climbing Island Peak, however, adds a new level of challenge:

  • Requires use of ropes, crampons, ice axe, and harness
  • Involves a steep snow headwall and a narrow ridge near the summit
  • Demands early pre-dawn starts and glacier travel

This trip is ideal for fit, experienced trekkers who want their first taste of Himalayan climbing.

Not necessarily, but it definitely helps. Island Peak is often described as a beginner’s mountaineering peak, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. You should:

  • Be comfortable hiking long days with a pack
  • Know how to use an ice axe and crampons (or be willing to learn)
  • Be confident on steep snow or ice

Most expedition companies provide a climbing skills briefing and training at Island Peak Base Camp. With a professional guide and some preparation, many strong trekkers succeed on their first try.

The full itinerary typically takes 18 to 21 days. This allows time for:

  • Trekking to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar
  • Acclimatization days to avoid altitude sickness
  • Climbing Island Peak from base camp with proper rest and contingency days
  • Return trek to Lukla

Trying to rush this trip is not advisable—altitude demands patience.

The best seasons are:

Spring (April to early June): Warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and stable conditions on the mountain

Autumn (late September to early November): Crystal-clear skies, ideal weather, and fewer snowstorms

Winter (December to February) is too cold and icy for most, and monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain and cloud cover.

The journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small airstrip nestled in the Himalayas. From Lukla, you’ll trek north through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Gorak Shep en route to Everest Base Camp. After visiting EBC and Kala Patthar, you descend to Chhukung and then climb Island Peak.

You'll need:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
  • Island Peak Climbing Permit (issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System, sometimes included with other permits)

Your guiding company usually arranges all permits as part of the expedition package.

You need to be in excellent physical condition. Training should start 2–3 months ahead of time and focus on:

  • Cardiovascular endurance (hiking, running, swimming)
  • Strength training (especially legs, core, and back)
  • Hiking with a loaded backpack to simulate real conditions
  • Practicing with boots and crampons if possible

Mental preparation is also key—summit day on Island Peak can be long and tough, often 10–14 hours round trip.

Altitude sickness is a possibility, especially since you’ll spend many days above 4000 meters and climb above 6000 meters. Symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea and fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of appetite
  • To reduce risk:
  • Choose an itinerary with gradual ascent and rest days
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Take Diamox if recommended by your doctor or guide

Your guides will monitor your health and may recommend descending if symptoms become serious.

During the EBC trek, you’ll stay in basic tea houses with:

  • Shared or private rooms
  • Simple beds, often with blankets
  • Shared bathrooms (sometimes outside)
  • Meals are hearty and include:
  • Dal bhat (rice and lentils)
  • Noodles, pasta, momos (dumplings)
  • Eggs, potatoes, and soups

During the Island Peak climb, you’ll sleep in tents at base camp, with meals prepared by the expedition cook.

With an experienced guide and the right itinerary, this expedition is generally safe and well-managed. Still, risks include:

  • Altitude sickness
  • Weather changes
  • Crevasses and technical climbing

We as a professional guiding company provide:

  • Trained guides with mountaineering certifications
  • Emergency oxygen and first-aid kits
  • Coordination for helicopter evacuation if necessary (insurance required)

Costs range from $2,800 to $5,000+ USD, depending on:

  • Group size
  • Services included (gear rental, porters, domestic flights)
  • Guide reputation

This typically includes:

  • Permits
  • Meals and accommodation
  • Domestic flights
  • Guides, porters, and climbing support

Not included: international flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, tips, and some gear rental.

This combination offers the best of both worlds:

  • The cultural and scenic experience of the world-famous Everest trek
  • The physical and mental challenge of a real Himalayan climb
  • Excellent acclimatization from the EBC trek before tackling a 6,000m summit
  • A sense of progression: first you walk in the footsteps of Everest climbers, then you become one
  • It’s the perfect way to take your trekking to the next level—from hiker to Himalayan summiteer.
