14 days Langtang Helambu trek is one of the longest trekking routes in the famous Langtang region and is the most adventurous one as it combines three popular areas: Langtang village, Gosaikunda Lake and Helambu. The trekking trail combines Buddhist culture of Tibetan, Tamang and Sherpa people with pristine forests, lakes, glaciers and peaks.
Located in northern part of Kathmandu, Langtang-Helambu trek takes you to the vicinity of Langtang Himalayan ranges. The trekking trail passes through Langtang National Park thus offers you the opportunity to explore wildlife of the region. The park is well known as the habitat of Red panda, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Boar etc.
Langtang village was destroyed in 2015 earthquake along with Kyanjin Gompa one of the most popular Himalayan monasteries. Langtang village has been reconstructed and is welcoming tourists again. You will be able to observe the peaks of Langtang Lirung, Changbu, Langtang Yubra and Langtang Lirung Glacier from this spot. Another highlight of this trek is the exploration of Gosainkunda, a holy lake situated at an altitude of 4300m. It is believed that there are 108 lakes in the area.
On your last leg of the trek you will pass through Sherpa villages of Helambu. Helambu is very famous for its natural beauty and wonderful climate with the superb views of the magnificent snow-capped mountains and rhododendron forests.
After early morning breakfast, our guide will pick you-up from your hotel. Drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi (1460m.) takes about seven hours. You head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Syabru Besi passing through Dhunche. While passing along the road at the bank of Trishuli River you catch a glimpse of Ganesh Himal, terraces and green hills. Stay overnight at lodge.
The first part of the trail crosses through Bhote Koshi and follows the Langtang Khola. This trail up to Bamboo where will stop for lunch. Afterwards, you trek to Rimche (2400m.) in 2hrs. From Rimche it is 20 minutes gradual up to Lama Hotel. En- route you could see red pandas, monkeys and bears if you are lucky. Stay overnight at lodge.
After breakfast we climb up for three hours to Ghoda Tabela via riverside. From Chhunama you cross the Langtang Khola and then climb up through forest path to Ghoda Tabela. It takes another 30 minutes uphill walk to Thangshyap where we have lunch. From here it is a gradual climb to Langtang Village. Only a few hotels have come up since the 2015 earthquake. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trail climbs gradually through small villages and yak pastures as the valley opens out further and the views become more extensive. The trail reaches the settlement at Kyangjin via Mundu village. Mundu Village offers panoramic view of Langtang Ri, Langshisha, Yala peak and Cherko Ri. Kyanjin hosts Kyanjin monastery and a small cheese factory. You arrive at Kyangjin by lunch time allowing time to acclimatize and explore the area. After lunch you can hike for a few hours to acclimatize as part of tomorrow’s preparation. Stay overnight at lodge.
As per your decision, you have four optional hiking programs: Kyangin Ri (4450m), Cherko Ri (4984m) Langtang Lirung Glacier (4200m), Langshisha Base Camp (4285m). It takes 4 hrs to go to Langtang Lirung Glacier and be back, 4 hrs for Kyangin Ri, 7 hrs for Cherko Ri, and 10 hrs for Langashisha Base Camp. Stay overnight at lodge.
From Kyangjin you retrace your route, following the Langtang Khola to Langtang village and then on to Ghora Tabela. After lunch, you continue the steep descent to Lama Hotel. Stay overnight at lodge.
After breakfast climb down for 3 hrs via Bamboo. At a point of landslide, you will ascend left to Thulo Syabru. Thulo Syabru is a big village of Tamangs where you will have lunch and dinner. Stay overnight at lodge.
From Thulo Syabru it is a steep climb through forests of oak, fir and rhododendron of 4 hrs until Khoprang Danda. Stop for lunch in Khoprang Danda. Enjoy the views of Ganesh Himal and soaring cliffs in Tibet side. From here it is gradual up to Sing Gompa. Stay overnight at lodge.
After breakfast two hours gradual up to Cholang pati through rhododendron forest. Along the way you will witness Ganesh and Annapurna ranges. Fom Cholang Pati it is one hour uphill to Laurebinayak where you will stop for lunch. After lunch another one and a half hours trek will take you to top of Laurebina (4165m), a great viewpoint. It takes another one hour gradual uphill trek to reach Gosainkunda. Stay overnight at lodge with view of Gosainkunda and Nag Kunda Lake.
After breakfast it is an easy uphill trek to the top of Gosainkunda Pass (4610m.) via Bhairab Kunda, Dudh Kunda, Chandra Kunda, Surya Kunda. The journey takes about one and a half hours. We will then climb down for three hours to Phedi for lunch. After lunch we will have to walk up and down for 2 hrs to reach Ghopte. Situated in the middle of a forest, there are only two hotels in Ghopte. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trail begins through a forested path for 2 hrs until Tharepati Pass. Tharepati is a good viewpoint for mountain ranges in all directions except south. You can either have early lunch at Tharepati or go directly to Melamchi Gaon. From Tharepati it is 3 hrs downhill trek to Melamchi Gaon. Inhabited by Sherpas, the village is in the middle of forest and has a monastery. Stay overnight at lodge.
Trek from Melamchi Gaon to Tarkeghyang (2743m) takes about four hours. After breakfast we trek two hours down through bushes and streams to Tarkado village. Another 2 hrs trek will take us to Tarkeghyang where we will have lunch. There is an old Buddhist monastery in Tarkeghyang which was damaged by 2015 earthquake. Have lunch and dinner in Tarkeghyang with village exploration. Stay overnight at lodge (tea house).
Trek from Tarkeghyang to Shermathang (2590m) takes about five hours. The trek travels through forested path, up and down till you reach Shermathang. In the middle of forest Shermathang is a Sherpa settlement. From Shermathang you can view the Langtang Himalayan range. Stay overnight at lodge.
The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. On the way, you come across several old villages. This day you will be greeted by pleasant views of mountains and also get to interact with local and friendly people. Afterwards take a short drive back to Kathmandu from Melamchi Pul Bazaar.
