Bokta Peak Climbing

Bokta Peak is a 6114m. tall trekking peak located in Kanchenjunga region of Taplejung district. It is one of the easiest climbing trekking peaks in the region. Anyone wishing to experience climbing in the Himalayas will have the best and exhilarating experience climbing Bokta.

The journey will be a mixture of trekking and climbing, a total of 29/30 days adventure. Crossing the Lapsang la pass (4500m.), one of the highest passes in the Himalayas, will be a challenge well worth undertaking. The base camp is set up at 5000m. The approach to the summit involves walking through a wide path of glaciers that traverses directly down from the top. Rock and snow forms the major bulk of the mountain.

The area is inhabited by Kirat people, namely Rai and Limbu. Their traditional culture and hospitality will be part of the overall trekking experience along with pristine wildnerness and rare wildlife. The trek passes through Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, a well established protected area, that is home to wild animals such as snow leopard, snow cock, blood pheasant, red panda, rhododendron, orchids, etc.

The best seasons for climbing the Bokta peak are either Spring (March, April, May) or Autumn (September, October, November). Our experienced climbing Sherpas and porters will provide you full assistance and support on your attempt for Bokta.

Bokta Peak Climbing (6114m.) Altitude Profile

FAQs

Bokta Peak is considered a technically challenging trekking peak, suitable for climbers with previous high-altitude and climbing experience. The ascent includes:

  • Glacier travel
  • Steep snow and ice slopes
  • Use of fixed ropes, ice axe, and crampons
  • Risk of crevasses and avalanche-prone sections depending on the season

It’s not for beginners. However, with strong fitness, acclimatization, and a professional climbing guide, it’s an achievable goal for intermediate mountaineers.

The full expedition typically takes 22 to 28 days due to its remote location and long approach. The itinerary includes:

  • Domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur
  • Jeep or bus ride to Taplejung
  • Overland and trekking journey through Kanchenjunga South Base Camp route
  • Acclimatization, summit attempt, and return

Because the region is far from Kathmandu and lacks airstrips like Lukla or Jomsom, expect a real wilderness expedition.

To climb Bokta Peak safely, you should have:

  • Prior climbing experience above 5,500 meters
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of mountaineering techniques
  • Familiarity with using crampons, ice axe, fixed rope, and ascenders
  • Good understanding of glacier travel and crevasse safety

Even experienced trekkers will find Bokta demanding. If you're newer to mountaineering, consider doing an introductory peak first, like Island or Lobuche East.

The best seasons are:

  • Spring (April to early June) – Warmer temperatures, clear skies, and relatively stable snow
  • Autumn (September to mid-November) – Cool weather, crisp views, and drier conditions

Avoid monsoon season (June–August) due to landslides and poor visibility, and winter (December–February) when extreme cold and snow make climbing unsafe.

You’ll need multiple permits:

  • Bokta Peak Climbing Permit (from the Nepal Mountaineering Association)
  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP)
  • Restricted Area Permit (required for certain village sections)
  • TIMS Card

These permits are typically arranged by your guiding company. Independent travel is not permitted in restricted zones like this—you must go with a registered agency.

Yes, it’s a major consideration. You'll spend many days above 4,000 meters, and the summit is over 6,100 meters. Common symptoms include:

  • Headache, nausea, dizziness
  • Fatigue, shortness of breath
  • Insomnia
  • To minimize risk:
  • Follow a gradual ascent
  • Take rest days for acclimatization
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol
  • Consider taking Diamox if recommended

Your guides are trained to recognize and manage AMS and related emergencies.

You need to be in excellent physical condition. Expect:

  • Long trekking days (6–8 hours)
  • Steep ascents, high altitudes, and variable weather
  • Carrying a pack (5–7 kg) and walking on snow and ice
  • Prepare 2–3 months in advance with:
  • Cardio workouts (running, cycling, stair climbing)
  • Strength training
  • Hiking practice with elevation gain and multi-day trips

Prices typically range from $3,500 to $5,500 USD, depending on the operator, group size, and services included. This generally covers:

  • Permits and park fees
  • Flights and local transportation
  • Accommodation, tents, food
  • Climbing guides and porters
  • Climbing gear (partial rental)

Personal gear, tips, insurance, and emergency evacuation (if needed) are extra. Be sure to choose a licensed and experienced company with safety training.

If you’re seeking:

  • Seclusion and raw adventure
  • A technically rewarding climb
  • Majestic views of Kanchenjunga, Jannu, and the Himalayan giants
  • Cultural immersion with Limbu and Rai communities
  • A non-commercialized mountaineering experience

…then Bokta Peak is the perfect challenge. It’s ideal for seasoned trekkers or mountaineers looking to escape the popular routes and explore a truly wild region of Nepal.

Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition ensures you to provide a well planned itinerary for Bokta Peak climbing. An experienced and highly professional climbing guide will be assigned to each climbing member. All necessary logistics will be taken care from our side. However, we expect to maintain good health and physical condition as well as well good mental preparation from your side.
