Himlung expedition (7126m) is a popular classic seven-thousand meters peak climbing trip available in Nepal for mountaineers to climb. It is located along Nepal-Tibet border in between Manaslu and Annapurna ranges..
Himalung Himal is very suitable for those who have basic mountaineering skills and eager to climb higher mountains. Himlung expedition itinerary includes two hidden and mysterious valleys, Nar and Phu. Nar- Phu area was opened for tourists very recently. The area itself is a culturally and naturally protected and is considered remote by all indicators. Therefore special permit will be required by the climbers for approaching the Himlung Mountain to climb. This expedition can be considered as an alternative trip to Ama Dablam or Baruntse expedition.
Trekking will begin from Bhulbhule that lies at 840 meters high from sea level. After one week of trekking, you will reach mysterious Phu village at an altitude of 4050m. You will have rest on the following day before heading to Base Camp. All these arrangements are prepared for well acclimatization through which your body physiologically prepares to adapt the altitude. Along the way you could enjoy traditional Nepali hospitality and culture, pristine wildlife, rivers, forests and beautiful Himalayan scenery. The upper reaches of Nar and Phu villages are inhabited by people of Tibetan descent who still practices Tibetan way of life style.
The Base Camp of Himlung will set up at 4900m, a vantage point to acclimatize and observe the mountain. Three additional camps, Camp I (5400m), Camp II (6000) and Camp III (6350 m) will be made before the summit. The summit will offer splendid views of Manaslu and Annapurna ranges.
Normally, it takes about 10 to 13 days to conquer the Himlung Mountain from Base Camp to top and back to Base Camp. The last portion of mountain has steep ridges, rocks and ice that need to be tackled. Our experienced climbing Sherpa and high altitude porters are desperate to make your summit dream come true.
Normally, spring (March, April and May) and autumn (September, October and November) are considered as best mountaineering seasons for mountain climbing in Nepal. Usually, weather and temperature during these months remain pleasant.
Himlung Mountain was opened for expedition only in 1992, and same year it was first ascended by a Japanese team. Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition, a reliable and legally authorized expedition operating company in Nepal has extended services required for Himlung expedition from the beginning.
On your arrival at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be greeted with flower garlands/Khadas. Our representative will then take you to your hotel. If time prevails, you will visit office for paperwork.

Today, you will visit popular world heritage monuments in Kathmandu including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Swoyambhunath, and Pashupatinath. Alternatively, you can also choose Bhakatapur and Patan sightseeing. By late afternoon, you will drive back to your hotel.

After early morning breakfast, our guide will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the bus station. Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, takes about six hours. During the drive you will follow Trisuli and Marshyangdi Rivers passing through several villages and you will enjoy views of green hills and snow-capped mountains. From Kathmandu to Besisahar, you will drive on a paved road.

After early morning breakfast, you will drive to Koto. Koto is a beautiful village with the mountain views of Annapurna and Manaslu range. Green lush forests on the way add another dimension to your drive. Koto is a small village mainly inhabited by Gurung and other indigenous people. Their life style is mainly influenced by Tibetan Buddhists.

You cross the river leading to the Nar Phu valleys and hike up through beautiful woods above the Phu Khola. The route takes you through some beautiful woods and past several small caves, and a pilgrims’ Dharmashala. After you emerge out of a narrow canyon, the trail actually passes under a wide waterfall just before the Dharmashala, from where the woods become thinner and the vistas wider.

A steep climb up the valley along a small, scenic river brings you finally to high pastures on a 3,200m plateau. You pass by e scenic Kharka of Meta, 3560m, a non permanent winter settlement of Nar, where you are likely to share the trail with a few yaks! This morning is one of the loveliest walks in the Himalayas.

Dropping steeply down to the river, you trek for a while along the river bank and past the “submarine” rock, passing some small possible campsites along the way. You start to see some of the unique, colorful Chortens for which Nar and Phu are famous. You have to walk carefully across a small glacial stream before reaching a larger one with a bridge only half covered with large slabs of slate. Another hour and a half of trekking through scenic canyon and gorges, you reach the Phu gate. This ancient gate provides you with you first view of the three villages of Phu, as well as an old “dzong” and the remains of the two forts, all now in ruins, but impressively situated atop the flatlands before Phu.

You can have interaction with locals and explore up the wide valley systems above you. You might walk up the valley to the summer grazing settlement or Kharka at Ngoru, a three hour’s walk past the gompa. Phu itself is an incredibly interesting village and you can observe the villagers spinning their yak and sheep wool and chat.

It takes approximately 14 days from Base Camp to summit Mt. Himlung (7126 m) and return back to Base Camp. However, weather condition may affect your proposed plan. Team work, acclimatization, and well planned itinerary and safety measures are very integral aspects for successful climbing.
