Team leaders Nirmal Purja (MBE) and Mingma Gyalje Sherpa and their team members Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Kiilu Pemba Sherpa, Dawa Tenjing Sherpa and Sona Sherpa accomplish the record breaking feat of climbing Mt. K2 (8611m) in winter season. Mt. K2 is the second highest peak in the world.

First summitted in 1954, Mt. K2 had never been climbed before during winter. It is a matter of enormous national pride for all Nepalese that our world-class Nepali mountaineers have successfully scaled it.

This great victory is a milestone in world’s mountaineering history, recognizes the exceptional courage and skill of Nepali mountaineers and will remain a lasting symbol of friendship between the peoples of Nepal and Pakistan.

This news could not come at a more trying time when the whole world is in the throes of Covid-19 pandemic. The achievement of K2 has offered a positive prospect and hope for the revival of global tourism industry and Nepal’s mountaineering and adventure sector.
