Manaslu Trek

Manaslu Trek

Tsum Valley - Manaslu region is quickly becoming one of the most popular trekking destinations in Nepal. The area has been opened for trekking as a special restricted zone, which means only a limited number of trekkers are allowed to enter the area every year by obtaining special trekking permit.

The Manaslu region offers a variety of trekking options depending on the time of the year and duration. Tsum Valley and Mansalu can be approached as independent trekking trails, but we can also combine the two beautiful routes to offer you the richest experience of the Himalayas, local culture and nature.

Manaslu trek is one of the toughest and most rewarding trekking trails under the shadow of Mt. Manaslu (8156m), the eight highest mountain in the world. Trekking in Manaslu will involve crossing several high Himalayan passes including Larkya La pass (5213m). Along the trek, you will have crystal clear views of Manaslu Himal, Baudha Himal, Ganesh Himal ranges among others. We will trek through Manaslu Conservation Area, which has been established in the valley to preserve its precious biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism. The area’s alpine landscape and unique ecosystem supports a varied wildlife including Himalayan Thar and Blue Sheep. The region is also a storehouse of precious herbs and medicinal plants that have been used by Himalayan people for centuries.

Tsum Valley Trek on its own also has a distinct appeal. In Tibetan dialect ‘Tsum’ literally means ‘lively’ and the inhabitants are called Tsumba people. Referred to as ‘Beyul Kyimolung’, or the ‘holy hidden valley of happiness’, it remains a most sacred Buddhist place in the Himalayan region. The Valley was visited by Guru Padmasambhava (Saint Milarepa), no less, who is said to have meditated in surrounding caves. The relics of those eras can still be found in the region including numerous ancient chortens, maniwalls and monasteries or gumbas. Rachen Gumba and Mu Gumba are perhaps the most important Gumbas in the region with thriving communities of monks and nuns.

The unique culture of Tsumba people of Tsum Valley closely resembles lifestyles and customs of Tibetans. Among unique tradition of the Tsum Valley is the polyandry system, an ancient practice by locals, along with traditional festivals such as Lhosar, Dhachyhang, Saka Dawa and Faning.

The combined Manaslu-Tsum Valley Trek, offers a rare opportunity to relish all the attractions that both Manaslu and Tsum Valleys and more. The trek combines the ruggedness and Himalayan beauty of Manaslu with the unique culture of Tsumba people of Tsum Valley. Our first leg of the trek covers the Tsum Valley before finally joining on the regular route of Manaslu Trek.
