Honey Hunting is exclusively a traditional activity practiced by ethnic Gurung community of Nepal. Honey hunting is so rare and unique that it still remains an isolated event carried out and observed only in few, remote places of Nepal. Ghalegaun, located north west of Kathmandu, in Lamjung district, is one of nearest destination to watch honey hunting. Situated at an altitude of 2100m from sea level, the route to Ghalegaun offers the most spectacular views of Annapurna and Manaslu Himalayan ranges.
The hunting primarily involves extracting honey from massive bee hives nestled in cliffs, that to 200m tall in height, with the help of traditionally weaved rope. To watch this feat performed by local honey experts will be a mesmerizing event of your honey hunting journey. The ropes are generally made out of bamboo, locally resourced from Niyalo and Choya. And locals carry this out only by reading astrological calendar, on auspicious dates.
October/November and May/June are the best seasons to watch Honey Hunting.
Ghalegaun also offers rare Gurung culture and tradition as part of honey hunting program for tourists and visitors. Both lodges and home-stay facility are available in this region.
Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Khudi which takes 7 hours.
You drive along the Prithvi highway across beautiful villages, local people, and landscapes. All the way you drive along the river valley. The tour to Buddhist Monasteries and Khudi Bazaar will bring you a lot of opportunities to study more about the local culture.
Day 02: Today you trek for six to seven hours for a Honey Hunting site.
On the way, you view many natural scenes. You will receive a hearty welcome by villagers and can enjoy Gurung cultural dances after dinner.
Day 03: The day you enjoy a few hours walk for a honey hunting site.
Honey hunters pray before they start. You can also view the heart thrilling honey hunting program at Cliff. After you enjoy the honey hunting program, return back to base camp village. In the evening, you will spend a few moments enjoying cultural dances of mother union.
Day 04: Trek to Khudi which takes six to seven hours.
You can enjoy swimming at the Natural swimming pool. In the evening, you can enjoy a nice walk on the bank of the Marshyangdi River and Khudi stream.
Day 05: Drive from Khudi to Kathmandu by bus takes 7 hours
Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Khudi 186KM, 6 hrs.
You drive along the Prithivi highway and come across beautiful villages, colorful people and agricultured landscapes. Today the route takes you all along the river valley.
Day 02: Trek from Khudi To Ghalagaun which takes about 6-7hrs.
After breakfast, the trail ascends all the way to Ghalagaun, The trail passes through the beautiful forest and if you are lucky, you will also get to see some of the areas wildlife. This area holds a tremendous potential for bird watching. It really can be a birdwatcher's paradise.
Day 03-4: Observe Honey Hunting In Ghanpokhari & Ghalegaun.
It is beautiful place to enjoy breathtaking views of numerous mountains. It is also situated on a beautiful mountain and is populated by Gurung people who have wonderful culture & tradition
Day 05: Trek from Ghalegaun to Pasgaun, which takes about 6-7 hrs.
After breakfast, your trail descends to Bhujung all the way, After the Bhujung trail; you will then ascend to Passgaun. It is long and hard day trip.
Day 06: Trek from Pasagaun to Pakharikot or Nanngdidhar which takes about 5-6hrs.
Trail ascends gently through jungles and beautiful waterfalls. Here you can also enjoy the joyful chirpings of the birds. After lunch, the trail once again begins to descend. It is a steep descent for about half an hour. One has to ensure that you carry enough water as there is shortage of drinking water in this area. The intense heat, humidity and the direct sunlight can sometimes be unbearable.
Day 07: Trek to Thumsikot, and then drive to Pokhara.
Trail descends about 1150 meters and then you drive approximately 3 hrs by jeep through unpaved road. Stay overnight at hotel in Pokhara.
Day 08: Sightsee in and around Pokhara and then drive back to Kathmandu.
Early morning, you drive to Sarangkot to have close-up views of Mt. Fishtail and Annapurna. Enjoy some sight-seeing in and around the city of Pokhara and in the afternoon drive or fly back to Kathmandu. (Driving takes about 5 hours by private car while flight takes about 25 minutes.)
