Langtang Valley Trek (9 Days)

Lantang Valley lies in northern part of Nepal close to Tibet. Adventurer and writer Bill Tilman once described Langtang Valley as “the most beautiful valley in the world”- a citation that is so unbelievably true.

The major highlight of the Langtang Valley Trek is the breathtaking views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal Ranges and the amazing glimpses of Langtang glaciers. Langtang ranges also host several exciting trekking peaks for climbing. The entire valley is an integral part of Langtang National Park, one of the oldest national parks in Nepal. Rare and endangered Red Panda found in region is a flag species of the park. Other interesting highlight of the trek includes a visit to the local cheese factory in Kyangjin and Sing gompas, a chance to try out local cheese.

Langtang Valley is inhabited by Tamang communities who still follow age-old cultural customs and Buddhist practices. Ancient Buddhist monasteries and Gompas dot the valley’s landscape and the spiritual air pervades their everyday chores.

Langtang Valley trail is an easy trek suitable for all age groups, ranging from young to old. The trek can be done any time of the year.

You head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Dhunche. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 02: Trek from Dhunche to Syabru Gaon (2581m.) takes about five and a half hours.

The trek today is very leisurely through forests and terraced hill slopes. As you enter Syabru, you descend to the ridgeline that separates the Langtang Khola from the Trisuli River. You will continue through the village to your campsite about fifteen minutes beyond on the slopes below the village. From here you can enjoy spectacular views of Langtang Lirung (7245m.) and Tibetan Himal ranges. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 03: Trek from Syabru Gaon to Lama Hotel (2470m.) takes about five hours.

The trail descends along the ridge on Syabru's main street and then drops to the Ghopche Khola (2050 m.) and again descends to the Landslide area (1810m.). Thereafter your trek ascends gently to Rimche (2400m.) through Bamboo (1960m.) before going along a level path to Lama Hotel. En-route you can see red pandas, monkeys and bears if you are lucky. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 04: Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3430m.) via Ghore Tabela takes about six hours.

At Ghora Tabela [3000m], the trail emerges from the forest. You can catch a glimpse of white monkeys and local birds. The trail continues to climb gently and the valley widens, passing a few temporary settlements used by herders who bring their livestock to graze in the high pastures during the summer months. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 05: Trek from Langtang Village to Kyangjin (3870m.) which takes about three hours.

The trail climbs gradually through small villages and yak pastures as the valley opens out further and the views become more extensive. After crossing several small streams and moraines, the trail reaches the settlement at Kyangjin. It is a dramatic setting, with snow covered peaks surrounding you in all directions. At this point, you can enjoy the panoramic views of Dorje Larpa (6990m.), Langtang Ri (6370m.), Langtang Lirung (7245m.) and several other peaks. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 06: This is a day for rest in Kyangjin Gompa while you can do some excursions in and around the area.

You can visit the monastery and the cheese factory, walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and tumbling glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Kyangjin Ri [4350m], directly behind the village, for a breath-taking panorama of the Langtang peaks. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 07: Trek from Kyangjin Gompa to Lama Hotel takes about six hours.

From Kyangjin you retrace your route, following the Langtang Khola to Langtang village and on to Ghora Tabela. After lunch you continue the steep descent to Lama Hotel. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 08: Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabru Besi via Sherpa Gaon takes about five hours.

The upper part of the trail is more beautiful for the panoramic view of mountains and green hill views. This path is broader and remains sunny through the different Sherpa and Tamang villages. The first half of the trail is gradually down and then the trail does a steep descent to Syabru Besi (1600m.). The main inhabitants belong to the Tamang community who has adopted Tibetan lifestyle. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 09: Drive from Syabru Besi to Kathmandu by bus takes about nine hours.

Poon Hill Trek

We enjoyed the trek to Poon Hill very much. The arrangements were handled in very professional manner and our guide Krishna was excellent. He handled all of the accommodation at the many guesthouses in a low-key and very efficient manner. He also sums to it that that we ordered our meals in advance. He is knowledgeable of the customs of the people in the villages along the way added to our enjoyment. He also provided some historical background. The matter was excellent for our descent to Poon Hill and the scenery was excellent.
